University Heights Real Estate
University Heights apartments provide people with a variety of affordable property types in a historical neighborhood. Its boundaries include West Fordham Road to the north, West Burnside Avenue to the south, the Harlem River to the west and Jerome Avenue to the east. Approximately 40,000 people live in this area that spans about one square mile.
In 1894, New York University purchased land in what became known as University Heights in order to build a rural campus as an alternative to the busy Manhattan campus it already offered. Approximately 80 years after NYU bought the estate, they sold it to the City of New York and it became what it is now Bronx Community College. However, the name University Heights remained with the area.
Due to its prominent history, there are many things to see in University Heights. The Hall of Fame for Great Americans, which was established in 1900, contains portraits and statues of people who have had a great impact on United States history. In addition, the beautiful architecture that University Heights has to offer can be seen at the St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church and the Gould Memorial Library, which has breathtaking stained-glass window displays.
Besides its historical worth, University Heights also offers its residents and visitors a small shopping district that runs along Fordham Road. This shopping district includes specialty and outlet stores, as well as department stores. University Heights is easily accessible via multiple forms of public transportation. For those who would like to live in an affordable and historical neighborhood in New York City, University Heights is definitely a place to check out.
